The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

didn't like it didn't like it it was amazing it was amazing it was amazing

I was drawn to this book mainly because of the hype surrounding it and also because it was a summer read, and well, it was summer. While I didn't hate this book entirely, I didn't like it very much. The main character Belly was supposed to be turning sixteen during this summer she "turned pretty", but I found it hard to distinguish between fifteen-almost-sixteen year old Belly and the eleven year old Belly in her flashbacks. I almost made a drinking game out of how many times she wanted to or decided to, stick her tongue out at one of the male characters, but alas, I thought of the idea when I was about 30 pages from the end so it was sober sailing for me. I didn't find the main love interest, Conrad, very enduring or exciting either although I did get the whole "bad boy" vibe that Belly was drawn to. I personally was rooting for Jeremiah, Conrad's loving and enthusiastic brother, the entire time, but was sadly and predictably disappointed. All of that being said, it was a very simple read, perfect for summer, and I can understand why people like it so much. It was just lacking for me a little bit, I am however planning to eventually read the next two, only to have all three look pretty on my bookshelf.
